ABOUT

TM VOCALISTS

Hi there! My name is Tyler McKinnon, and I’m a teacher, composer, and creator.

I lost my voice when I was 19 due to overuse and fatigue. I had what was called Muscle Tension Dysphonia, and for almost a year of my life I sought help from singing teachers, trying to find my voice again.

My confidence was at an all time low, and I didn’t know how to fix what was happening.

It’s because of my own vocal struggles that I became a voice teacher.

I want to help others better understand their own voice, build up their confidence and establish a strong foundational vocal technique.

I tell my students that we need to become ‘detectives of our own voice’.

You can perform a vocal exercise a hundred times, but if you don’t understand why you do that exercise, you’re not actively growing as a singer.

I focus on the “understanding why” of singing. It is my goal to help my students understand the in’s and out’s of their voice so that they have the tools to self access and so they won’t have to always come back to me for the answer.

At 19, I didn’t understand why my voice wasn’t working as I wanted it to, but once I sought that understanding and built my confidence back up, I launched myself into a fulfilling singing career.

I worked in professional theatres and productions across Canada and the UK, performing onstage with artists like Natalie Weiss, Ben Folds, Glass Tiger and The Canadian Tenors, and I was a founding member of the Canadian A Capella group, 6 Minute Warning.

I’ve composed and co-produced two musicals in two of the biggest International Fringe Festivals in the world, The Edinburgh Festival Fringe and The Edmonton Fringe Festival.

In addition to private 1-2-1 vocal coaching, I also teach voice at Guildford School of Acting, City Academy, The Rhythm Studio and in September 2025 I will teach 1-2-1 voice at Urdang City St. George's University of London.

If you’re at a crossroads, feeling unsure in your voice, wanting to understand your voice better and feel more confident with your singing, I’ve been where you are, and I can help.
